    A home age, two-slot receptacle or cloth-covered conductor can suggest older wiring but does not prove which circuits are active, complete or safe. Circuit tracing and qualified assessment establish the actual system.

    Ontario ESA guidance says existing concealed knob-and-tube conductors can remain when protected at 15 A, not overloaded by added outlets and visibly in good condition; its code is not retroactive, but new knob-and-tube installation rules have been removed.

    Damage, deterioration, poor connections, overheating, mechanical abuse, overfusing, unsafe alterations and insulation contact can materially change the condition and required response.

    A GFCI can provide defined shock protection for certain ungrounded receptacle arrangements, but it does not create an equipment ground. Some surge protection and equipment functions require a real ground reference.

    A new breaker panel does not replace branch-circuit conductors hidden in walls and ceilings. Panel work and knob-and-tube replacement are separate scopes that may be coordinated in one project.

    Insurance acceptance is a contract and underwriting decision. An electrical assessment, permit or inspection record does not force every insurer to offer coverage or accept the same remedy.

    Rewiring can disturb plaster, drywall, insulation, flooring and heritage finishes. Older materials may need hazardous-material testing and a coordinated access and restoration plan before electrical work begins.

    Adding insulation

    Natural Resources Canada warns not to let insulation contact old knob-and-tube wiring. Confirm whether the wiring is active, what separation or replacement is required and how the electrical and insulation scopes will be inspected before material is installed.

    Panel or service replacement

    A fuse box, obsolete panel or limited service is being replaced. The quote must state which old circuits are reconnected, replaced, left disconnected or excluded; new distribution equipment does not silently certify every concealed branch circuit.

    Mixed old and modern wiring

    Partial renovations can leave several wiring generations, hidden transitions and unclear circuit ownership. Trace endpoints and accessible splices instead of describing the whole house from one panel photo or one visible attic section.

    What is knob-and-tube wiring?+

    It is an older open-wiring method that routes separate insulated conductors along framing on porcelain knobs and through framing in porcelain tubes. It was used in many early-1900s residential installations and normally does not provide a modern equipment bonding conductor.

    Is knob-and-tube wiring illegal in Canada?+

    Do not apply one national yes-or-no rule. New work must follow the current requirements adopted for the address. Ontario ESA says new knob-and-tube installation rules were deleted, but its code is not retroactive and existing wiring can remain under defined conditions.     Does all knob-and-tube wiring have to be replaced?+

    Not because of the name alone. Condition, protection, loading, alterations, insulation contact, renovation scope, local authority requirements and insurer terms can support maintenance, focused correction, phased replacement or full replacement. Ontario ESA explicitly identifies blanket replacement as a myth while also defining circumstances that require correction.

    Is knob-and-tube wiring safe?+

    Its condition cannot be decided from age alone. ESA says properly maintained wiring meeting its defined conditions can remain, while damaged insulation, poor connections, overheating, overfusing, added outlets, mechanical abuse and unsafe alterations require attention. Modern wiring also provides safety and capacity features the older system lacks.

    How can I tell whether knob-and-tube wiring is active?+

    Visible porcelain knobs, tubes or old conductors are clues, not proof of active coverage. A qualified assessment maps protective devices to outlets and lights, traces accessible conductors and transitions, and distinguishes active circuits from abandoned remnants without unsafe homeowner testing or panel access.

    Can a modern breaker panel still feed knob-and-tube wiring?+

    Yes. A prior project may have replaced the fuse box or panel while reconnecting existing branch circuits. The modern panel date does not prove the house was rewired, and the old wiring condition does not by itself prove the panel must be replaced.

    Will replacing the electrical panel remove knob-and-tube wiring?+

    No. Panel replacement changes distribution equipment and transfers or reconnects circuits. Knob-and-tube conductors in walls and ceilings remain unless the project separately replaces and disconnects those branch circuits.

    Can I get home insurance with knob-and-tube wiring in Canada?+

    There is no universal insurer form.     Can GFCI receptacles make knob-and-tube wiring acceptable?+

    How long does knob-and-tube rewiring take?+

    Does knob-and-tube wiring mean I need a 200 amp service?+
