    Outage or service problem

    Utility outage, panel fault, or damaged service?

    An area outage can affect the whole property, while a tripped branch circuit affects a smaller portion. A partial outage with unusual brightening, dimming, severe flickering, heat, odour, or appliance problems can indicate a service or connection issue. Do not open equipment to investigate.

    Check the serving utility's public outage information from a safe location. If service conductors, the mast, meter area, or nearby trees are damaged, keep people away and contact the utility or emergency services. Utility equipment ownership and response procedures vary.

    After power is restored, reconnecting loads gradually may be appropriate only when equipment is undamaged and the utility or responding professional has not given other instructions. Appliances affected by smoke, water, overheating, or abnormal voltage need assessment before reuse.

    Operate generators outdoors where exhaust cannot enter the building. Never backfeed a wall receptacle. Connecting a generator to building wiring requires approved transfer equipment and a compliant installation that prevents unsafe energization of utility conductors.

    What should I do if water is near the electrical panel?

    Stay out of standing water and keep away from electrical equipment in or near the wet area. Do not touch the panel, switches, pumps, cords, or appliances from the wet area.     Can I use a portable generator during an outage?

    How fast will an emergency electrician arrive?

    Response time depends on location, weather, access, contractor dispatch capacity, utility involvement, and whether emergency services must clear the site first. Before agreeing to dispatch, confirm the provider identity, licence where applicable, call-out charge, estimated arrival window, diagnostic rate, payment terms, and what work can legally be completed after hours.
