Panel basics
Start here if you are identifying equipment, symptoms, or the difference between a panel and an electrical service.
What is an electrical panel?
An electrical panel is the distribution point for a building's branch circuits. Power enters through the service equipment, and breakers in the panel protect individual circuits from overcurrent. People also call it a breaker box, loadcentre, fuse box, or distribution panel. The panel is only one part of the electrical service, which can also include the meter, service conductors, mast or underground connection, grounding, and main disconnect.
How long does an electrical panel last?
There is no single expiry date. Condition, environment, available replacement parts, installation quality, electrical demand, and manufacturer support matter more than age alone. A panel may remain serviceable for decades, while a newer panel exposed to moisture or overheating may need attention sooner. Age is a reason to inspect, not proof that replacement is required.
What signs justify an electrical panel inspection?
Arrange an assessment when breakers trip repeatedly without a clear appliance cause, lights flicker under load, the panel buzzes or crackles, the cover feels unusually warm, labels are unreliable, rust or water staining is visible, or there is a burning odour. Loss of power on part of the home can also indicate a service problem. Smoke, arcing, or a burning smell is urgent: keep away and contact emergency services or the utility when appropriate.
Does an old panel automatically need replacement?
No. An electrician should identify the panel model, condition, breaker compatibility, loading, service rating, and any documented defects before recommending work. Replacement becomes more likely when approved parts are unavailable, the equipment is damaged, the panel lacks capacity, insurance or sale requirements cannot be resolved another way, or planned loads require a different design.
What is the difference between a panel replacement and a service upgrade?
A panel replacement changes the distribution equipment, often at the same service rating. A service upgrade increases or materially changes the supply and may involve the meter base, service conductors, mast, underground route, grounding, utility design, and main equipment. A quote labelled '200A panel' does not by itself confirm a complete 200A service upgrade.

How do I know whether I need 100A, 125A, or 200A service?
Service size should be based on a documented load calculation and the rules used by the local authority, not home square footage alone. Heating, hot water, ranges, dryers, air conditioning, EV charging, suites, workshops, solar, batteries, and future electrification all affect the result. Load management can sometimes support a new load without increasing the service, but the equipment and design must be approved for the application.

Not automatically. A 200A service provides more capacity, but it can add utility, equipment, and construction cost that a property does not need. A compliant 100A service may be adequate for a modest home with gas heating and managed loads. The better choice is the smallest compliant design that supports present demand, realistic future plans, and acceptable operating limits.

Straightforward residential panel work is often completed within one working day, but that is a planning range rather than a promise. Service changes can take longer when utility design, inspections, trenching, meter relocation, grounding corrections, or other trades are involved. Ask the contractor to separate on-site work time from permit and utility lead time.
Will the power be off during panel work?
Usually, yes. The panel cannot be safely replaced while energized. The outage may cover only the working period, or it may depend on a utility disconnect, inspection, and authorization to reconnect. Before the date, discuss medical equipment, sump pumps, refrigeration, remote work, heating or cooling, security systems, and any generator or battery arrangement.
How should I prepare for a panel replacement?
Keep the panel and service route accessible, save computer work, and follow the contractor's shutdown instructions for sensitive equipment. Plan for food, temperature, medical, and connectivity needs during the outage. Do not remove the panel cover or attempt preparatory electrical work. Confirm parking, pets, tenant notice, restoration responsibilities, and who will coordinate the utility and inspection.
What should a panel-upgrade quote include?
A useful written quote identifies the contractor, project type, service rating, panel and breaker scope, permit holder, inspection responsibility, utility work, known corrections, exclusions, taxes, restoration, outage assumptions, warranty, and change-order process. Ask whether the price is fixed, an allowance, or an estimate. Compare scope line by line rather than choosing from one total alone.

Can I replace an electrical panel myself?
Panel replacement is high-risk work involving service conductors, fault current, grounding and bonding, circuit identification, permits, inspections, and utility coordination. Licensing and homeowner-permit rules differ across Canada, but legal permission does not make the work low risk. Use a qualified electrical contractor who is authorized for the work in your jurisdiction.
Should I reset a breaker that keeps tripping?
A single trip caused by an obvious temporary overload may be reset after the load is removed, following the manufacturer's instructions. Do not repeatedly reset a breaker that trips again, will not latch, feels hot, smells burnt, or is associated with buzzing, sparking, or damaged equipment. Repeated tripping is protective behaviour that needs diagnosis, not a nuisance to bypass.
Are fuse panels unsafe?
A fuse panel is not automatically unsafe merely because it uses fuses. Risk depends on condition, correct fuse sizing, modifications, available capacity, and the rest of the installation. Problems such as oversized fuses, adapters, damaged sockets, poor additions, or insufficient capacity require attention. Replacement may also be driven by renovation, insurance, or parts considerations.
Are Federal Pacific, Stab-Lok, Zinsco, or other older panels automatically dangerous?
Brand identification is a reason for a model-specific professional assessment, not a diagnosis from a logo alone. Product history, certification, breaker type, condition, modifications, loading, and local authority guidance all matter. Do not remove a cover or test breakers to identify the equipment. Photograph the closed panel and label, then ask an electrician to document the exact model and recommendation.

A panel does not normally reduce electricity consumption by itself. It can improve capacity, circuit organization, protection options, and compatibility with new equipment, but energy use is determined mainly by connected loads and how they operate. Treat claims of automatic utility-bill savings from a panel swap with caution.
What maintenance does an electrical panel need?
Keep the required working space clear, keep the door closed, maintain readable circuit labels, and look from outside for moisture, corrosion, impact damage, unusual heat, sound, or odour. Do not remove the cover, tighten internal connections, spray cleaners, or exercise breakers unless the manufacturer or a qualified professional directs it. Inspection frequency should reflect equipment condition and building use.

One quote may cover only a panel swap while another includes a service upgrade, meter base, grounding, surge protection, specialty breakers, permit, utility fees, deficiency corrections, drywall, trenching, or restoration. Equipment specifications and assumptions can also differ. Ask each contractor to identify inclusions, exclusions, allowances, and the conditions that could trigger a change order.
Does home insurance cover panel replacement?
Insurance wording and underwriting decisions vary by policy and insurer. Maintenance, age, or a voluntary upgrade is commonly treated differently from damage caused by an insured event. Ask the insurer in writing whether it requires a specific correction, contractor documentation, permit closeout, or proof of replacement, and whether the work affects coverage or premiums.
Will replacing a panel increase home value?
A documented, permitted upgrade can remove a buyer concern and support planned electrification, but there is no guaranteed dollar-for-dollar return. Value depends on the local market, the previous equipment, remaining electrical issues, workmanship, records, and whether the capacity is useful to buyers. Keep the contract, permit, inspection, equipment schedule, and warranty with the property records.
Can I finance an electrical panel upgrade?
Some contractors and lenders offer financing, and some regional efficiency or electrification programs may support related work. Availability and eligibility change. Compare the cash price, annual percentage rate, fees, security interest, early-payment terms, and total cost of borrowing. Do not assume a panel project qualifies for a rebate until the program administrator confirms it.

Does electrical panel replacement require a permit in Canada?
Panel and service replacement generally requires an electrical permit, notification, or equivalent authorization, but the name, issuer, exemptions, and eligible permit holder vary. Provinces, territories, municipalities, delegated safety authorities, and utilities can each have a role. Confirm the exact process before work starts and identify the permit holder in the contract.

The permit holder is normally responsible for required inspection requests and corrections, although local procedure varies. The utility may require authorization from the electrical safety authority before reconnecting a changed service. The written quote should name who files, who pays fees, what inspections are included, and which closeout document the owner receives.
What happens during a panel inspection?
The inspector or safety officer reviews the work against the applicable code and declared permit scope. Depending on the project, that can include equipment ratings, conductor sizes, grounding and bonding, breaker compatibility, circuit identification, clearances, service details, and required protection. An inspection is a regulatory check, not a guarantee that every concealed or pre-existing condition was examined.
Do I need a 200A service for an EV charger?
Not always. The answer depends on existing demand, charger rating, charging schedule, other electric loads, and the permitted load calculation. A lower charging rate or approved energy-management system may avoid or defer a service upgrade in some homes. The charger, controller, panel, service, utility rules, and local approval must be assessed together.

Sometimes. Interconnection rules, bus and main ratings, breaker location, service configuration, export limits, backup loads, and equipment certifications determine the design. A battery can also require transfer or isolation equipment. Have the solar or storage designer coordinate with the electrical contractor and utility before assuming the existing panel can accept the system.
Can load management avoid a service upgrade?
In some projects, approved load-management equipment can limit or sequence EV charging, heating, hot water, or other large loads so calculated demand stays within the existing service. It is not a universal shortcut: the device must suit the loads and installation, and the design still needs local approval. Compare equipment cost, operating constraints, resilience, and future plans with the cost of a larger service.
