    Start with evidence, not amperage.     The meter-label test is not valid. EPCOR says “200A” on a meter means the meter can read up to 200 amps. It does not prove the property's service conductors, protection or utility supply are rated for 200 amps.

    A trustworthy proposal therefore names the calculation, existing and proposed ratings, service configuration, customer-owned and EPCOR-owned work, permit holder, inspection sequence, outage, restoration, allowances, exclusions and closeout evidence. A larger panel cabinet or a verbal utility allowance is not the same as an executable service plan.

    Use one decision rule across every quote: choose the least-complex approved path that supports the documented present and future operating brief without hiding an unacceptable owner consequence. That can be a same-capacity replacement when condition is the issue, a subpanel when distribution is the constraint, managed demand when selected loads can wait, or an EPCOR-reviewed service increase when required simultaneous use exceeds the retained capacity. Revisit the decision whenever a later EV, heating system, suite, spa, workshop, solar or battery project changes the load case or the agreed equipment settings.

    Use precise scope language. It prevents a same-capacity equipment change from being sold as additional utility capacity and gives owners a fair way to compare performance, approval work and construction.

    Best fit: A documented defect is limited to a breaker, connection, enclosure issue or other repairable condition.

    Prove it: Identify the defect, approved replacement parts, permit need and test result. Do not describe a repair as added amperage.

    Best fit: The enclosure, breakers, condition or circuit organization needs renewal but calculated demand still fits the existing service.

    The supply route can matter more than the panel cabinet

    Detached home with overhead service

    EPCOR maintains the overhead service line. The owner remains responsible for attached and interior components other than the utility meter.

    Verify: Confirm the service point, mast, attachment, weatherhead, conductors, clearances, meter socket, grounding and planned disconnect/reconnect.

    Detached home with underground service

    For typical residential underground arrangements, EPCOR describes the owner boundary as beginning at the property line and continuing through the meter socket; EPCOR owns the meter.

    Verify: Confirm the Service Entry Point, EPCOR-supplied cable, conduit, trench, locates, route, meter location and hardscape or landscaping restoration.

    Semi-detached or row house

    The unit may have an individual service, a shared route or common equipment. A larger unit panel cannot establish upstream capacity.

    Verify: Map the real meter and service arrangement, property lines, common-property authorization and responsibility for shared construction before quoting.

    Condominium or apartment

    Common service, distribution, meter stacks and condo governance make a unit-only assessment incomplete. Homeowner permit eligibility is restricted for these property types.

    Verify: Obtain property authorization, building electrical data and the applicable contractor/commercial permit path before committing to equipment.

    Infill, redevelopment or new service

This turns a vague request for 200 amps into a design brief that retained-service, management and upgrade options can answer fairly.

    Proposal red flags

    A 200A recommendation without a load case

    The proposal names an EV, heat pump or suite but does not show the assumptions that make retained service insufficient.

    The meter label is treated as the service rating

    Do Edmonton homes automatically need 200A service for an EV charger?

    No. Daily driving, parking duration, vehicle AC limit, charger setting, existing calculated demand and other planned loads determine the capacity case. A lower fixed setting or an accepted EV energy-management system may preserve the existing service when the calculation and permit path support it. A full service increase is one option, not an automatic EV requirement.

    Does 200A printed on my EPCOR meter mean I have 200-amp service?

    No. EPCOR's current service-connection FAQ says the 200A marking means the power meter can read up to 200 amps; it does not establish the property's service rating. The main protection, service conductors, meter equipment and supply configuration must be verified together by a qualified person.

    What is the difference between a 200A panel and a 200A service?

    A panel cabinet may be rated for 200 amps while the home remains supplied by a smaller service. Usable service capacity depends on coordinated main protection, conductors, meter and service equipment, grounding, calculated demand and EPCOR's connection. Installing a larger-rated enclosure by itself does not authorize or create 200-amp service.

    Does an Edmonton electrical service upgrade require a permit?

    Yes. The City of Edmonton lists a service upgrade as electrical work requiring a permit. Work should begin only after the required permit is issued, and a service change or upgrade uses the applicable electrical service inspection. Keep the permit holder, inspection and EPCOR reconnection sequence in the written project plan.

    Can an Edmonton homeowner replace or relocate the main panel?

    The City allows eligible owner-occupants of qualifying single-family homes to obtain permits for limited homeowner electrical work, but states that homeowners who are not certified Master Electricians cannot install or relocate the main service panel or service equipment. Condos, row housing and other property types also have different homeowner-permit eligibility.

    How early should I apply to EPCOR?

    EPCOR's published process recommends submitting a complete online application at least four months before desired energization. It also describes quote, design, site-readiness and energization phases. Those published intervals are planning references, not a promise for a particular address; external approvals, utility construction, incomplete information and seasonal work can change the schedule.

    How much does a 100A-to-200A upgrade cost in Edmonton?

    A defensible price requires an accepted capacity path and property scope.
